The photograph below documents the situation at the Maxella AV and Lincoln BL stop on the BBB number 3 Line. It is the sort of “work” one would expect from the LACMTA but, in this case performed by BBB. They taped or caused to be taped shut the aperture in the plastic pipes associated with power poles. These pipes were used as improvised trash cans. BBB N.B. The stop still needs a trash can!
Su Topo will include this comment in
every post with the above until BBB corrects the problem. For quite
awhile BBB has been charging for intra-line transfers, reversing the long
standing policy of free transfers to other BBB lines. And lots money
to build a big headquarters on Colorado BL just east of 4th
Street. Mr. King, just a few dollars for a trash
can, you might need a few more to cover other BBB bus stops too, will erase this
section. After all, it is Marina Del Rey! :-)

White Line Incursion Series
Su Topo uses video to highlight the
problem of scofflaw drivers endangering Metro bus passengers yet, no authority
seems to want to take ownership of the problem. The issue is not unique
to the particular site which this Mole documents, but is illustrative of a
general problem. Your Mole encourages you to report similar problems to
the appropriate agencies in your area(s) and hopes that you will have better
luck than he. In the youtube.com videos linked below one can see exactly
what happens when the policing agencies fail to enforce traffic laws.
The videos, linked below, document
that —and this is important— a never ending stream of vehicles fail to use the
lane as required by law.
Neither are the policing agencies
active when it comes to protecting us by bringing these obvious and frequent
traffic law violations to an immediate halt. The LACMTA is derelict as
well, in that they fail to use the near hourly proof of the violations captured
by their on-board bus cameras, mentioned here and discussed at length in the posting
of 2012-05-31.
In the following video we see that the cameraperson didn't have much time but still obtained a recognisable
video of yet another scofflaw driver cutting I front of a Meto bus. Please see the www.youtube.com video here.
Then, hoping to makeup for the poor video quality this month, a videographer delivered this take, which covers a Hertz LAX shuttle bus cutting in front of a moving 111 Line bus! The driver of the Hertz bus, a licensed Class B operator, should know better. His reckless driving endangers both his passengers and Metro's too, as well as people who might be in the crosswalk. But he doesn't care, neither do the policing agencies nor Mr. Arthur T. Leahy, who has been given the solution to the problem by su Topo.
Which solution, I repeat it below, is to have the bus stop just behind the crosswalk hatching thereby eliminating the space in front of the bus. The
Los Angeles Times reinforces the idea that texting and driving is a fatal idea(Lacher). Ms Lacher interviews Warner Herzog whose powerful documentary, "From One Second to the Next", made an indelible impression on su Topo. If you haven't seen it you can find the link at the end of last month's post and here too. I wanted to link the excellent Lacher interview, but, using the Times site search mechanism, I couldn't find it, neither searching by headline nor reporter yielded s result. I will be available in the Times at most libraries, consult "Works Cited" below.
A Times piece (Weikel) covers a transportation project which is a rarity; one which finished on-time and under budget! Perhaps that is because it involves Caltrans. The project replaced a grade level crossing of two sets of tracks with a "flyover", essentially a bridge.
The Times covers (Nelson) another part of the LACMTA's fragmented, incomplete, poorly conceived transportation "plan", viz., the Broadway streetcar. In short, the funding for the "plan" is about $200,000,000 (million), er, short. Ms Nelson covers one of the LACMTA's current fiascos and indirectly quotes advocates of the streetcar as describing it as "... the missing link for downtown's growing car-free culture". This Mole could supply anther appellation for this money wasting idea but declines to do so.
Ms Nelson also reported on (Nelson J) the crash of a Foothill Transit Silver Streak bus on the 10 Freeway for the Times. The contract driver of the bus, Ms Castillo, was employed by First transit. "Seven people, including Castillo, were treated for minor injuries. One passenger sustained more serious cuts ...".
The Metro Insider has two paragraphs(Metro Insider) about the new LA Metro Transit Watch app. In short if you are looking for on-board policing, look to your smart phone and pray that they arrive quickly. Using the "app" one can "... report suspicious activity , incidents that require law enforcement's presence and [otiosely and redundantly] incidents that may occur onboard Metro buses and trains."
Your Mole is in a highly technical business. So when he reads about the application of technology to everyday matters his interest is piqued. The Los Angeles Times reports (Chang) that Kroger Corporation, whose local instantiation is Ralphs, is using QueVision's technology to improve the checkout staffing levels and speed customers out the door.

When I was in Japan, in some cases JR East, the organisation responsible for rail transportation in Tokyo and surrounding areas, would force trains to move along station platforms at a crawl. Then too, one never saw platforms without several rail employees on duty, which employees were always on the alert. This Mole believes that the LACMTA is placing too much emphasis on suicides and ignoring the cause(s) of accidents; one of the main reasons being that, as Ms Nelson clearly writes: "The Blue Line's tracks are entirely at ground level, and the line intersects roadways and walkways in more than 100 places [Emphasis mine]. Metro says the train's structure is not a factor [Emphasis mine]".
The Times reports (Lin II) that "[w]hen Los Angeles officials [the city council] approved plans for a 39-story residential tower in Century City, they declared the site suitable for development without a review of underground earth-quake faults." Now it turns out that the LACMTA cannot build a subway station in the area. Both of these last two stories fall under the rubric "When Politicians Involve Themselves in Technical Matters". What a surprise it must have been for them that we experience earthquakes here in Los Angeles. Please read the piece which is available, at many if not most, public libraries.

Nondeterministic Travel♪
Ah the Silver Line, it's a bus folks, the schedule fragment, shown above, documents that the "window" for arrival at freeway "stations" is twelve (12) minutes wide. This means that one cannot reliably determine one's arrival time to a given destination. Since the Green Line operates on a fixed schedule, in theory at least, one day you will be able to make a Harbour Freeway connection with the Silver bus and predict your arrival time at a given destination. On another day the Silver bus will be earlier or later than the "scheduled" time and you will be late.
If the bus is early, you will be late and if the bus is late, you will be late. This has the effect of forcing one to always be early —six minutes at least, twelve is better— in order to ensure your on-time arrival at your destination. In fact, the schedules that are given to the Sliver Line drivers don't show arrival times at a given freeway stations so they are not required to even meet the twelve minute windows described in Note D above.
2013-09-04: We have been waiting in Marina del Rey for a 108 Line bus. A 108 Line bus, which should have left the turnaround point at 13:20, showing an "Out of Service" head sign and run number 59 [estimated] zooms past my group which waits on the south east corner of Mindanao and Lincoln BL.
At 14:10 bus number 5146, which left the turnaround at 13:55, and showing an out of service headsign with run number 60, arrives. About an hour spent waiting and worse yet left stranded by the prior bus. Why is maintain a schedule more important than providing transportation? It must be that the LACMTA defines their job as running on-time* buses as opposed to providing transportation.
*On-time with them is relative; or perhaps the LACMTA is focused on providing a modified third-party call-in service [Nextbus, ah-er, Nextrip] that will tell you approximately how late your bus will be.
2013-09-06 15:30 @ CCTC: As I wait for the CCMBL #6, I hear someone speaking Mandarin nearby. It is two flight attendants from a Chinese airline. We discuss some places in the Pacific that we have mutually visited. They get me to demonstrate my [lack of] Mandarin language skill and I leave them laughing.
2013-09-10 @ 11:30 aboard a 704 Line bus. Su Topo offers his seat to a lady with a
baby, in an always crowded 704 bus. She and her husband, Brock and baby London,
are from Australia. They live in
Melbourne where Brock works as a water engineer. We have an interesting chat and I help them
find the shopping center at the south-most end of 3rd Street in
Santa Monica. I leave them there after
giving them directions to the Pier.

2013-09-17: Your Mole briefly guides three young ladies from Liechtenstein, a country which is surrounded by Switzerland and Austria, to a bus headed for Santa
Monica rather than one bound for Inglewood.
2013-09-20 @ ITC 09:00: While waiting Your Mole produces as short movie about the trash at the ITC, then rides a 740 Line bus. A man wearing an extra large waist pouch is studying a BBB #3 schedule and using a marking pen to make cryptic marks on the back of his left hand. Another man wearing sun glasses sits next to me in the window seat. Although the day is terrifically bright, he is trying to do something with his e-reader which reflects the sun's glare. There are lots of empty seats on this bus, half of them on the shady side. It does make me wonder?
I want to intersect the 130 Line at Hawthorne BL and Artesia. Nothing in schedule stored on my phone shows where that stop might be. It would be great of the LACMTA, in their free time, would code the stop locations on the map.

2013-09-26 At a bus stop on Century BL: A Shelter Clean employee is just finishing. He has taken away the used trash bags and replaced them with empty bags. But he leaves lots of trash, orange sections and etc. around the
area in front of the benches. He gets in his truck, CA license ending in 3603.

The LACMTA pays out the tax monies received from the citizens of Los Angeles County and apparently makes no effort —su Topo has reported on the less than dedicated work of Shelter Clean before— to supervise or verify the quality of the work being done. It seems that Shelter Clean has not much interest in its employees work either. The less time spent at each shelter, the more shelters they can bill for "cleaning" in a day's time. ¿Es no?
Speaking of basura while waiting for a bus at the ITC, I filmed a short sequence of just some of the trash scattered around the edge of the site. There is lots more, scattered in and around the bushes and pretty much everywhere EXCEPT in the trash cans. Metro really needs to send their cleaning crew to this site AND they should not forget their gum-removal pressure hoses. You can see only a small amount of the total litter here.

On Sunday morning, September 22, 2013, KABC broadcast the LACMTA's appeal to the public; the agency is requesting that we help stop suicides on the Blue Line, you know the one which has the highest fatalities in the nation —not all of which are suicides.
Thank you to KABC7! whose Sunday morning team: Ms Salvo, Ms Winkler and Mr. Gregory are informative and a pleasure to watch too!
Of course, the better answer is for the LACMTA to start providing us with rapid transit. Adding rapid transit to the existing mass transit requires that they grade separate their rail lines and the Orange Line (that's a bus, folks) as well, from other traffic the way they do in big cities. A bi-product of doing this will be to deny pedestrian access to the rails. It seems simple but, the LACMTA would rather put down five mile of unsafe rails, than three miles of safe rails. *But with the LACMTA nothing is simple (vide supra). I also question involving the pubic in the LACMTA's "suicide prevention" program. A good Samaritan could well lose his/her life in attempting to prevent a suicide.
Cautionary Note: Those employed by the LACMTA should NOT view the following video. The speed of the train(s) in the videos, the fact that they do not have to share the right of way or stop at stop lights because they are truly rapid transit, will likely make you dizzy, nauseous, confuse and frighten you.
This video shows trains from the DART [Dallas Area Rapid Transit] system. Now, it is important to understand that these trains are controlled by signals (flashing lights and bells) at grade crossings. Although not the completely grade separated configuration which we desire, but this is truly a step up from the LACMTA's Toonerville trolley approach, which places mass transit squarely in the middle of lots of traffic.
The Los Angeles subways are rapid transit as is the Green Line. So at one time someone at the LACMTA knew the difference, but alas, that knowledge has been lost to an organization which has no institutional memory.
The present goal of the organization now seems to be to spend money to build anything that can be thrown together with out regard to either functionality . Neither is developing and improving on a "best practices" model, very much on their mind. One case in point is that access control, think Expo Line, has again become optional or something which "may be added in later".

out our galaxy. "Another blane" is likely meant to be "Another [3D] [mem]brane. Back to "dark energy", some are now postulating that the unseen [in our universe] dark energy is really the effect of the bulk's strong gravity.

The format is Driver number

Bus stop “flag pole” somewhere between the bus front door frames. A
negative number, e.g., -3 is the approximate distance in metres (think yards
dear readers) between the nearest bus door vertical frame member and the flag
pole signifying that the bus stopped short of the flag. A positive
number, e.g., +3 (metres) is the approximate distance between the nearest bus
door vertical frame member and the flag pole signifying that the bus stopped
past the flag. The value for C[{Y/N}], “Y” tells us that the driver
stopped within an easy step from the curb to the bus, “N” means it was NOT an
easy step from the curb to the bus. It is this Mole's belief that
an average experienced good driver should be able to control his bus so as to

feature is installed on many buses and operates on extremely few. Another
“money down the toilet” LACMTA investment. La Taupe that this is intended
for the visually impaired because people who can see can read the “head signs”.
ASAS = Automatic Stop Announcement System the GPS (Global
Positioning System) driven mechanism for generating audio for the upcoming
stops. N.B. Because of the low power (read weak) processors used in the
on-board stops may be too close to identify stops separately. This is
known as a granularity problem. Then too, if the driver operates the bus
at speed above the speed limit you will find the system “back announcing” stops
which you have already passed. I find that this will NOT keep some
drivers from complaining “that you didn’t signal (ring) in time. They

don’t. Therefore, I apologize on behalf of Blogger.com for the changes
which they make, of which I do not approve. Sometimes, what I see,
thankfully you don’t, is 24 point type –it is giant and other times they
swallow my text, although it still seems to be there. In fairness to
them, things seem better, although this is partly because I do understand which
of their “features” do the most damage to me and consequently do not use them.
Communicating these problems to them, for me, is something like having teeth
extracted without the benefit of anesthetic, actually it is less fun than
that. By their design, there is no simple e-mailing them with
"Please look at my say, posting of 2009-06-28, it is weird!” I am hoping
that one of their developers will someday read this, copy my code and improve
their text to HTML engine. Until then, lo siento.
