America’s Worst♪
When politicians involve themselves in technical matters, expect failures.
*************************************************************
The photograph below documents the
situation at the Maxella AV and Lincoln BL stop on the BBB number 3
Line. It is the sort of “work” one would expect from the LACMTA. They
taped or caused to be taped shut the aperture in the plastic pipes associated
with power poles. These pipes continue to be used as improvised trash cans. BBB N.B. The
stop still needs a trash can!
BBB Maxella Trash
Fix???♪
Su Topo will include this
comment in every post with the above until BBB corrects the problem. For quite
awhile BBB has been charging for intra-line transfers, reversing the long
standing policy of free transfers to other BBB lines.
Too, BBB has spent lots of
money to build a big headquarters on Colorado BL just east of 4th Street. Mr.
King, just a few dollars for a trash can, you might need a few more to
cover other bus stops too, will erase this section. After all, it is Marina Del
Rey! :-)
Why a trash
container is needed♪
The photo above shows exactly what
people will do when a trash container is not provided. They will jury rig
something. What they did in this case is rip off the tape which covered
the plastic pipes at the base of the utility pole and stuffed their trash into
the pipe, nice, huh?

that trash containers are installed along BBB routes with a simple three-line
memorandum.
White Line Incursion Series
Su Topo uses video to
highlight the problem of scofflaw drivers endangering Metro bus passengers yet,
no authority seems to want to take ownership of the problem. The issue is not
unique to the particular site which this Mole documents, but is illustrative of
a general problem. Your Mole encourages you to report similar problems to the
appropriate agencies in your area(s) and hope that you will have better luck
than he. In the youtube.com videos linked below one can see exactly what
happens when the policing agencies fail to enforce traffic laws.
The videos linked below document the
important fact that a never ending stream of vehicles fail to use the lane as
required by law.
Neither are the policing agencies
active when it comes to protecting us by bringing these obvious and frequent
traffic law violations to an immediate halt. The LACMTA is derelict
as well, in that they fail to use the near hourly proof of the violations
captured by the on board cameras, mentioned here, and discussed at length in
the posting of 2012-05-31.
In the following video(s) we see
further instances of scofflaw drivers, a black SUV sandwiched in between two
shuttle vans, cutting in front of Metro a 111/311 bus.
Please see the video of three vehicles which cross the solid white line and cut off a Line 111/311 bus.
Thanks to www.youtube.com for their excellent video support!
Thanks to www.youtube.com for their excellent video support!
Please carefully note that, in some
videos, pedestrians are pinned to the curb by the vehicles that cut in front of
the bus —as a result these pedestrians are illegally denied the right-of-way.
Which right-of-way would be unchallengeablely theirs IF, and
only IF, Mr. Leahy would have one of his staff
explain su Topo’s simple solution (vide infra)
to him.
In spite of the potential for these
violations to occur several times per HOUR, I have never
seen a police presence at this location. One would think that with a bus
schedule taped to the dashboard one of the several policing agencies would have
made some arrests by now. Unless they have "more important"
work, than protecting bus passengers, to do.
La Taupe feels that it is appropriate
to dedicate these video(s) to ALL the agencies that should be protecting us.
So, they are dedicated to (1): Airport (LAWA) Police, the L.A.P.D., the L. A.
County Sheriff’s Department and Mr. A. Leahy who is CEO of
the LACMTA.
Su Topo has
recommended a simple solution to the problem. That is, have
the 111 Line buses pull up to pedestrian crosswalk then stop and discharge
passengers. Doing so eliminates the space in front of the bus which the
always-in-a-hurry scofflaws use to cut in front of the bus. But, with
the LACMTA nothing is simple. Although the solution could be
implemented with nothing more than a memo to the 111/311 Line drivers, it is a
task for which the LACMTA is inadequate.
OVERMATCHED (for a while anyway)
The
Mole reads the papers and other things, obviating the necessity of your doing
so.
The Los Angeles Times
(Nelson) covered the move, from Denver, to Los Angeles of the LACMTA's new
CEO. The first thing I noticed was that
he is being paid less than he was in Denver, i.e., $327,000 or $23,000 less
than he earned in Denver.
So that your Mole to
make an estimate of exactly what Mr. Washington will do for the LACMTA —believing that the past is the best predictor of the future— he reviewed the
type of transportation which Denver has in place now.
Presently Denver's city to airport
service is via (1) "Sky Ride”. “SkyRide" is RTD’s convenient, affordable bus service to
and from Denver International Airport (DIA)“ and East Rail and (2) Denver East Rail from the city to DIA.
The first line in the Denver
Post piece (Samuelson) is “You can't do it at LAX,,
…”. They refer to a single seat (not
four seats) to LAX. Please read it via the "Works Cited" link.
What Mr. Washington
oversaw in Denver was, viz, “… the first public-private partnership for transit
...”. This may be the way out of transportation for the LACMTA.
Mr. Washington's former city has (or will very soon have) a connection from the city to its airport. I wanted to ask the operators a question so I sent email messages.
In response to su Topo's query which was intended to determine whether the Denver, city to DIA was rapid or mass transportation, I received professional replies from a representatives of the agency.
"The East Rail Line does have at-grade crossings along the route, along with a number of grade-separated crossings/bridges as well. The top speed on the train is 79 mph, which will likely occur in the areas that do not have any pedestrian or vehicular interactions. The trip from Union Station in Denver to Denver International Airport will take 35 minutes."
Please use this link to access more information about the line.
Unfortunatel we find that the line in NOT rapid transit due to the "at-grade crossings along the route".
Quoting from the Times
(Nelson2) article, which I also featured last month, “Arthur T. Leahy's performance as
chief executive has been under confidential review by the Metro board of
directors for more than six months, and a majority of members were ready to let
his contract expire in April, according to sources familiar with the
negotiations. In an interview with The Times, Leahy, 65, said leaving Metro was
his choice.”
But don't be too
concerned for Leahy, who “… is expected to be hired by Metrolink, Southern
California's troubled commuter rail agency.”
Perhaps, that should be –other troubled commuter rail agency. In any event the LACMTA's loss is ….umm, well
anyway.
The worrisome idea which seems to be held by the LACMTA hierarchy is: good management can salvage a flawed plan. That is simply not true! However good the new management is, it is saddled with an overabundance of poor plans badly implemented. This Mole is no longer concerned that he will
have nothing to write about :-).
The “Bullet Train” is in
the news again (Vartabedian); and the news is not good! It seems that the CHSRA
forgot the natural order of things. In
the supermarket it is: Select items then checkout. In building “Bullet Trains: (even those which
are based upon technologies of the 1960s) –it's: Purchase the land then implement
your build plan. Now that everything is (kind of) ready CHSRA
wants to buy the land BUT, apparently some owners don't want to sell.
Here is Mr. Vartabedian: “… a wide range of Central Valley
farmers and landowners who complained about lowball state offers and the damage
their operations will suffer for a project they say may never be completed.”
I understand their feelings completely, since several transportation
operators who operate in California, excepting BART, have lots of
trouble with the two concepts: on time and on budget. So what this Mole hears the Central Valley
Farmers saying is “if you won't complete it anyway, please, go somewhere else
and not complete it there.”
Going back a slightly more than a year
the Los Angeles Times (Vartabedian2) described a common source of
real life problems –the interface. It
seems that Metrolink will have a need for Art Leahy's magic in mating the
CHSRA's “bullet train” to Metrolink's older “rolling stock”. Mr. Vartabedian details the problem of having
to transfer between the San Francisco to Los Angeles
—read Merced to Burbank— bullet
train to Metrolink's diesel powered trains in Burbank.
Loopy Solution♪
EURIKA! We can apply the LACMTA's fix for this kind
of design flaw. That's it! We can build a … what? An Uptown Connector!! Problem solved. Like the actual “Downtown Connector” or
“tracks to nowhere”. The “Bullet Train”/MetroLink” can be another “ring
solution”, an attempt to Band aid a bad design.
It might be a solution acceptable to the LACMTA to “fix” other design
and construction flaws by a series of interlocking “rings”. Although this Mole would prefer to call them
“loops”.
Nice work
Mr. Vartabedian! Please read the entire
article and others that are linked in “Works Cited”.
Metro/New York City News informs us (na.) of the continuing dangers of railroad grade level crossings. The piece, an excellent one, which includes all recent grade level crossing accidents, describes the efforts by politicians to upgrade safety at these dangerous convergences.
Grade level crossings are an artifact of our agrarian past. Vehicles were few and railroad terminology, e.g. "cowcatcher", tells a story of our past. In this Mole's mind, "improving grade level crossings" means eliminating them. An efficient construction company can find a cost-effective solution to the problem.

In this Mole's mind, "improving grade level crossings" means eliminating them. An efficient construction company can find a cost-effective solution to the problem.
For the most part, excepting the Green Line which has NO grade level crossings the LACMTA build out will add grade level crossings they see fit. Each one of these crossings will be the scene of future accidents.
Here is what the New York State Department of transportation says: "Improving and/or eliminating highway-railroad grade crossings is so critical that for more than 30 years the federal government has provided states with dedicated funding established to improve safety and eliminate hazards of highway-railroad grade crossings. The Department’s Highway-Rail Grade Crossing Safety Section administers this federally-funded program for New York." (Source dot.gov.ny)
And of course, our own LACMTA, rather than eliminating these dangerous crossings, only builds more of them into their Toonerville system.
Please read this excellent Metro article which is linked in "Works Cited", below.
The Times features an article (Nelson3) about
yet another grade-level accident. This
one involving the Expo Line which “left 12 people hurt, one critically.” Your Mole sees accidents like these today and
going forward as a negative legacy, that will keep on taking away, as a
side-effect of Los Angeles’ Toonerville Trolley system where minimum investment
is of overriding concern.
It is reminiscent of Ford’s Pinto philosophy; in the case
of the LACMTA, it is more cost effective to allow the accidents to happen and
pay the victims or their beneficiaries than to design a proper, more costly rail system —one with grade separation.
Ms Nelson covers all the details in her eminently readable
prose, so please read the piece.
Honolulu gets it right
with Rapid Transit rail!♪
One can easily
see from the above photo, that Honolulu really has done it right with their
transit plan. It is elevated RAPID

Los Angeles downtown to LAX is available, if one is ever available.

Silver Line Map♪
2015-03-12: As I ride aboard a line 910 bus
to a downtown meeting, I study the map so that I’ll know where to board. LACMTA work products cannot stand much
scrutiny —the map is no exception. Study
the photo above or click it for an enlarged version which should open in a new
browser tab and study it there. N.B. the
arrows and letters at the arrow tails.
The “W” (Wrong) denotes an incorrect positioning of the 7th/Metro
Center stop. The arrow with a “R” at its
tail shows a better (but not perfect) approximation of the location of the subject stop. It pays to plan ahead as I did by reviewing
what is available from the LACMTA and making a determination as to exactly how
useful it is.

2015-03-24 At Inglewood Transit Center: Su Topo noted the mosaic composed of
thoughtlessly discarded blobs of chewing gum (pictured above). Where the LAXCBC was cleaned by high pressure
hoses, the ITC doesn't get that sort of treatment.
One would think that ITC is not equipped with trash containers, that
is not the case. It seems that the users
of this bus center prefer to drop any unwanted materials and let gravity take
over from there.

adopted by other cities, some in foreign countries, in solving the city to
airport rapid mass transportation challenge.
Cautionary Note: Those employed by
the LACMTA or LAWA should NOT view the following video(s). The speed of
the train(s), the fact that they neither share the right of way nor stop at
stop lights, because they are truly rapid transit, will likely make you dizzy,
nauseous, confuse and frighten you.
I believe that the Hawaiian Rapid transportation plan detailed herein (Vide supra "HART") covers the city to airport demonstration of rapid transit for this month.
The combined population of the line's termini is 17,748,000, larger than Los Angeles, but with more geographical challenges, I believe that we here in Southern California are cursed, or something, with can't do organizations that seemingly can't learn either (with the exception of Bart)! In Los Angeles the LACMTA is building the same type of rail that is found in San José, CA.
Please use this link to use the interactive system map for San José, CA and its neighbouring cities.

Is E.T.
phoning us? Gliese 581’s planets may be calling earth —however unintentionally. The Daily Mail reports (Zolfagharifard) that signals from the star Gliese 581, which were earlier dismissed, may now be a kind of proof of life [Mole's term].
An earlier Daily Mail article (Niall) informs us that in
2008, a signal from the area of star system Gliese 581 was discovered. No further “signals” have been yet
discovered.
The
planet Gliese 581g is the suspected source of the signal. Gliese 581g orbits at the same relative
distance from it's sun, called the Goldilocks zone because it is the area most conducive to
supporting life, as we on earth do.
The
signal is described by the Australian scientist, Dr Ragbir Bhathal, of the
University of Western Sydney as, 'We found this very sharp signal, sort of a
laser lookalike thing which is the sort of thing we’re looking for - a very
sharp spike. And that is what we found. So that was the excitement about the whole
thing.'
What intelligence might be
encoded in such a signal? Below I've shown a terrestrial TV signal as shown on
an oscilloscope. Now a TV signal from our neighbours 22 light years away might
look different. It would be a function
of the frequencies used, the number of raster lines for make up the image and
etc. And of course, our terrestrial TV
signals —the ones which could be intercepted, anyway— travel as electrical
pulses through space. We know that modern
communication signals travel as light pulses through fibre optic cables but
laser beams could also be modulated to carry information.
Video Signal On An Oscilloscope♪
It would not be impossible
that, in a relatively short time
–provided that the signals were from a TV broadcast or audio, we could have one
of the greatest broadcasts imaginable, a 22 year delayed, kind of live, ongoing
stream from fellow inhabitants of our galaxy.
But, of course, we must first find a reliable signal which may be much
more difficult than it appears.
Imagine lots of laser
signals traveling through space.
We must determine which
ones persist for a long duration, which ones are like police communication —short
bursts which are seldom repeated. What
does long duration really mean? Gliese is rotating, we are rotating. It is not as easy as tuning in KCRW (89.9FM)!
You can see the
youtube.com presentation of a video signal on an oscilloscope here.
I performed a brief check of the literature and found this description
of laser communications: “The advantages of optical communication
systems are wider bandwidth, larger capacity, lower power consumption, more compact equipment,
greater security against eavesdropping, and protection against interference
than those with radio frequency (RF) communications
(Hyde,
Edelson, 1997).” [referenced in Toyoshima, M. et al.
